Contreras, shown here in a cellphone video secretly recorded by a young woman working at a Dexter convenience store, has avoided jail time for harassing women in Dexter while on duty. Contreras agreed to a plea agreement Wednesday in which charges of battery and stalking will be dismissed, if he successfully completes one year of unsupervised [auth] probation. He also agreed to surrender his law enforcement certifiation in New Mexico. (Toby Martinez Screenshot) After appealing his convictions to district court, former Dexter police chief accepted a plea agreement Wednesday that will keep him out of jail, while ensuring that he never is employed by law enforcement again within the state of New Mexico. Mario R. Contreras accepted a plea agreement in district court Wednesday, without admitting guilt. He entered an Alford plea to one petty misdemeanor count of battery and one misdemeanor count of stalking, of which Contreras was found guilty of in May after a trial in magistrate court. An Alford plea is a guilty plea in criminal court, whereby a defendant asserts his innocence, but admits the evidence would likely persuade a judge or jury to find him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. There, even after a witness was able to coax one gun away from the officer, Contreras produced another gun, and shot and killed Bascom, then himself.
