Excerpt: An Army veteran who was running for Congress in Arizona suspended his campaign Monday
after he suffered a drug overdose. "Today, I have suspended my campaign for the US House of
Representatives and am seeking treatment for substance abuse disorder," Chris Taylor, a City Council
member in Safford, told NBC News in a statement. "I will fully cooperate with local authorities on any
matters arising from my recent relapse and overdose."Taylor's decision to drop out of the Republican
primary in Arizona's 1st Congressional District was first reported by The Arizona Republic and the Gila
Herald. Taylor, a married father of two who served two combat tours in Afghanistan, had struggled with
opioid addiction in the past.
His campaign website says he founded a nonprofit in 2014 called Desert Eagle Addiction Recovery
"dedicated to helping individuals, especially fellow combat veterans, suffering from drug addiction."
In his statement Monday, Taylor said he "recently relapsed after having so many solid years in sobriety."
"I have to figure out where I went wrong," he said. "Thankfully I have every resource available to me
through the Veterans Affairs Administration and I have the strongest support system one could dream
of.
"The only thing I can do is face this head on in complete humility and put one foot in front of the other
so that I can get the help needed to be the father and husband that my family deserves," he added.
Taylor was one of three Republicans hoping to challenge Democratic Rep. Tom O'Halleran in the fall.

Excerpt: A former Marine corporal has pleaded guilty to smuggling more than 150 pounds of
methamphetamine and cocaine from Mexico into the United States and will be sentenced in November.
Austin Travis Dempsey, 22, was arrested by Customs and Border Protection agents in Calexico, California soon
after midnight on Oct. 28, 2018 as he tried to enter the U.S. in a Ford F-150 pickup truck. When asked why he
had been in Mexico, Dempsey said he was visiting a friend he had served with in the Marine Corps, according
to a federal complaint filed in California's Southern District. The agent then tapped on the truck's gas tank and
heard a solid noise "he found abnormal," the complaint said. CBP then scanned the vehicle with a dog and an
x-ray machine and found "anomalies" inside the doors and the tank, where they later discovered a total of 130
packages — 112 which tested positive for meth, and 18 others that tested positive for cocaine, the complaint
said.

Jenkins must serve three years of supervised release after his custodial sentence. He was
convicted on multiple counts including racketeering, robbery and falsification of records. Jenkins
pleaded guilty in January and admitted taking part in at least 10 robberies of Baltimore citizens,
planting drugs on innocent people and re-selling drugs he stole from suspects on an almost daily
basis, including heroin, cocaine and prescription painkillers.

Detective Momodu Gondo, who has pleaded guilty in the case, testified in a federal drug trial last
fall that Jenkins “was like an animal, just going about investigations the wrong way.” Levin said
Jenkins served honorably in the Marine Corps and then the Baltimore Police Department for a
number of years. “He and others were responsible for seizing hundreds if not thousands of illegal
firearms and getting them off the streets of Baltimore City. At some point, regrettably, something
changed,” Levin said. “Whether that’s a result of something that happened during his time in the
military, something during his time in the Police Department, or as a result of the death of his
son, remains uncertain.” The case may be the biggest corruption scandal to hit the department.
The alleged crimes took place during a federal civil rights review of the Police Department, and
stretch back years to when some of the officers were in other units in different parts of the city.
The fallout from the indictments has included hundreds of dropped court cases that relied on the
word of the officers, with the public defender’s office saying thousands of cases have been
compromised.

Prosecutors have convicted several Marines in recent weeks for crimes including rape and child
pornography, and dozens of similar cases continue to percolate through the military criminal justice
system. The cases are coming to light due to a series of Freedom of Information Act requests filed by
The San Diego Union-Tribune over the past four months. Documents released by the Marines reveal
some of the most serious cases tied to senior leaders like ex-Chief Warrant Officer E. DeLeon Jr. At a
Camp Pendleton court-martial last month, a military judge convicted DeLeon of possessing and
distributing child pornography. Although the judge sentenced him to seven years behind bars, a pretrial
agreement capped the Marine’s imprisonment at five years.
